What is a groin injury?
A groin injury occurs when there is damage to the area or to the muscles or tendons around the groin. It's usually due to a groin strain in the adductor muscles, which occurs when they are stretched too far or even torn. This then results in localised pain in the groin or upper thigh.
Acute injuries can include a blow to the area which damages the tissue or muscle surrounding the groin.
Groin injuries are often graded according to severity. Although the majority are not usually classed as serious, the higher the grade, the more painful your injury can be:
- Grade 1 - this happens if the muscle is stretched too far or torn. Walking might not cause any issues but anything more strenuous, such as running, will likely be painful.
- Grade 2 - this involves an increase in pain and difficulty when walking or engaging in other movements.
- Grade 3 - the most serious, this is when a tear occurs in the whole of the muscle or tendon. Pain will be severe and instant and there may be significant swelling. Movement of any kind will be difficult, with running being near-impossible.
How are groin injuries treated?
As most groin injuries are mild to moderate, immediate treatment involves using ice to decrease the swelling and taking painkillers. It's important to rest the injury for as long as it's needed to prevent further damage.
If a groin injury is more severe, longer-term treatments such as physiotherapy, exercises like stretching, or even surgery might be necessary.
What is the recovery time for a groin injury?
For first- and second-grade injuries, it generally takes up to a few weeks for the muscle or tendon to heal. During this time, care should be taken to rest the groin injury and not apply any excessive pressure. This might mean avoiding sports, running, long-distance walking or sudden movements.
Recovery time for grade-three groin injuries could take much longer, depending on the tear, and it might be up to four months until the muscle or tendon is fully healed.
Suffering a long-lasting groin injury can be debilitating and leave you frustrated that you're not able to get on with your life. It can be even more distressing if the accident that caused the injury wasn't your fault. Claiming groin injury compensation could help you on the road to recovery. What are the common causes of groin injuries?
What are the common causes of groin injuries?
Groin injuries are most often a result of the straining of a muscle. Sometimes they're simply caused by an accident and no one is to blame. However, in other cases, a groin injury can be down to someone else's actions or misjudgement. Some of the common causes include:
- Falling - a groin injury can occur after a trip or fall, especially if a sudden movement causes a muscle to strain or tear. A fall can happen just about anywhere including in a public place, while walking on a pavement, or at work. Employees in all industries could be at risk from a fall, slip or trip at work and, in fact, statistics show that falling is the most common cause of a non-fatal accident in the workplace.
- Lifting heavy equipment - heavy lifting or the pushing or pulling of equipment is another common cause of groin injuries. Such movements can result in a groin-muscle tear or strain if manual handling is not carried out correctly or if the object is too heavy. Many of these injuries occur in the workplace and employers have a duty to make their staff aware of such risks.
- Sudden impact - an acute blow or impact can cause a groin injury. These type of injuries can be as a result of being involved in a road traffic accident, being struck by heavy equipment or machinery or through the direct actions of another individual.
- Playing sport - groin injuries are extremely common among sportspeople and athletes. They are usually caused by sudden movements such as twisting. Repetitive movements can also be a factor, leading to overuse of the muscles and injury. Groin injuries are widespread in all areas of sport and athletics, and there's often no one at fault but, if you do feel that someone else is responsible for causing your sporting injury, we might be able to help you to claim groin injury compensation.

Frequently asked questions...
Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to make a claim on behalf of a loved one. For instance, you can claim on behalf of your child if they were injured and under the age of 18.
You may also be able to claim on behalf of an injured person who's suffered head or brain trauma, or someone who has a pre-existing medical condition which means they are unable to make a decision themselves. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is in place to protect vulnerable parties and help people establish when a person lacks capacity to make their own decision.
If you are claiming on behalf of a loved one, it is important you have all the details of their accident and medical treatment. A personal injury solicitor will be able to take you through this and explain how the compensation claim process works in these situations.
If your loved one has died due to an accident that wasn't their fault, we understand how difficult it can be to cope. While we can't take back what happened, we can help you to claim compensation which may relieve some of the financial pressure you're facing.
Yes, there is a time limit for making an injury claim. Under most circumstances, you will have three years from the date of the accident to make a compensation claim.
Every claim we handle is different and that makes it hard for us to say how long your compensation claim might take. However, the bulk of the claims we handle are relatively short in duration.
In simpler cases where fault is clear and undeniable, the claim may be settled quickly, and even disputed claims can be negotiated to a settlement in approximately 12 months.
However, if you've suffered a serious or life-changing injury then your compensation claim may take longer. This is because we need to understand its full impact and make sure your future rehab or treatment costs are adequately covered.
You can rest assured that we will stay in touch with you throughout the process so that you'll always know how things are progressing.
