What are the common types of farm accidents in the UK?
Accidents occurring in the farming and agricultural industries can result in severe, debilitating and, sometimes, fatal injuries. In fact, farm accidents in the UK cause more fatal injuries than any other sector and, during the year 2020-2021, 41 people were killed due to an agricultural or farm accident. The main risks involve heavy machinery, transport and animals.
Farm equipment accidents are the most common causes of agricultural injuries while at work, though there are other risks which can also result in an accident.
- Being struck by a moving vehicle - this is the main cause of fatal farm tractor accidents. An overturned tractor or vehicle can also cause severe injury or result in fatality.
- Contact with machinery - being struck by farming equipment such as shredders, cutters or cultivators can cause a wide range of machine injuries, many of which can be serious and result in permanent damage.
- Slips, trips and falls (including falling from height) - slipping and falling carries a bigger risk than normal in an agricultural setting. Falling from height from a vehicle such as a tractor, or from large machinery or buildings, can cause a number of severe injuries.
- Being struck by an object - trees, heavy equipment and unstable buildings can strike farmers or employees and result in injury.
- Manual handling - accidents involving manual handling often cause serious damage due to the type and weight of equipment being lifted.
- Fires - farms often house many flammable substances such as fuel which can pose a risk of a fire in an outbuilding or on the land itself. Workers can suffer life-threatening injuries if they get caught or trapped in a fire.
- Animals - farm animals have been known to cause injury to workers, particularly when handling such livestock. Although usually minor, workers have suffered fatal injuries from farm animals.
Employers have a duty of care to protect their employees and reduce the risk of an accident in the workplace. In an agricultural setting, this involves providing the correct, well-maintained equipment, PPE, and machinery training.
If you've been injured while working on a farm and the accident wasn't your fault, you could make a claim. Call us today on to see how our agricultural accident claims experts can help.
What are some of the common injuries sustained in a farm accident?
Agricultural accidents can cause a wide range of injuries, many of them serious and even life-threatening.
- Crush injuries - these commonly occur from being struck by heavy farm machinery and can cause damage almost anywhere on the body. These types of injuries can result in tissue trauma, swelling, nerve damage or organ injury and often have long-term complications.
- Broken bones and fractures - these can be as a result of falling, being struck or limbs getting caught in large machinery.
- Head injuries - many farm accidents can cause head injuries and can even result in long-lasting complications such as brain or nerve damage. Falling from height is a big risk, as is slipping or falling when working with agricultural equipment.
- Lacerations - these are common injuries across the agricultural industry, often from farm equipment accidents or animal attacks.
- Burn injuries - fires on agricultural land can result in burns being sustained anywhere on the body.
If you've suffered any type of injury caused by a farm accident and it was the result of someone else's actions or negligence, you could be entitled to claim farm accident compensation.
How much farm accident compensation could I get?
Every claim is different and, for this reason, there's no fixed compensation amount for a farmer's accident claim. When our team of experts examine your case, they'll assess a variety of factors to determine the value of compensation awarded. These include:
- The cause of your injury
- The severity of your injury and any long-term damage sustained
- The effects on your lifestyle
- Your ability to continue to work and earn a living
- Any emotional effects or mental-health implications resulting from your accident.

No win no fee means you will only pay your legal team if your claim is successful and you are awarded compensation.
If you win your claim, your solicitor will typically make the following deductions from the compensation you are awarded:
- A ‘success fee' for winning the claim.
- The other side will usually be required to make a payment towards your legal costs and expenses but any shortfall may also be deducted from your compensation.
- The cost of the premium for any legal protection insurance you may have needed to ensure your claim is risk free.
You keep the rest and this will always be the majority of the compensation awarded to you. The deductions we list above will only be made when your compensation is paid. There are no upfront costs and no hidden charges.
When you talk to one of our personal injury experts, we can determine if you have the right cover and help you organise insurance before you make a claim.
Every claim we handle is different and that makes it hard for us to say how long your compensation claim might take. However, the bulk of the claims we handle are relatively short in duration.
In simpler cases where fault is clear and undeniable, the claim may be settled quickly, and even disputed claims can be negotiated to a settlement in approximately 12 months.
However, if you've suffered a serious or life-changing injury then your compensation claim may take longer. This is because we need to understand its full impact and make sure your future rehab or treatment costs are adequately covered.
You can rest assured that we will stay in touch with you throughout the process so that you'll always know how things are progressing.
In cases where the injured person was under 18 years of age when the accident or incident occurred, the three-year period expires on their 21st birthday.
If you don't issue your claim within those time limits, you won't usually be able to proceed. This is called being 'time-barred'. Extensions to the time limits are only available in exceptional circumstances and we can talk you though these if they're relevant to your claim.
If you were injured as a contractor or self-employed worker on a job, and it was not your fault, you could still make a claim for compensation. Self-employed contractors hired by a third-party business have the same health and safety protections as employees. Many sectors employ contractors. It's a common practice in areas like construction, financial services, retail, healthcare and information technology.
