What are the different types of scarring?
There are a few different types of scars. These are usually defined by their appearance and how they heal:
- Fine-line scars will remain visible but fade over time and do not usually cause long-term discomfort.
- Keloid scars will keep growing after the wound has healed and can prove painful.
- Hypertrophic scars are where the tissue builds up around the wound, although they do not continue to grow like keloid scars do.
- Pitted scars usually form as a result of skin conditions.
- Contractures are where the skin tightens, usually as the result of a burn.
Whether you've suffered a facial scar, a burn or a cut finger at work, compensation can help you along the road to recovery. Our expert solicitors are here to support you, so feel free to get in touch on or request a call back for a time that best suits you.
What are some common causes of scarring?
What are some common causes of scarring?
If someone else was responsible for causing harm that left you with a permanent scar, compensation could help you get back on track. Injuries can occur as a result of an accident, negligence or even aggressive behaviour and they can happen almost anywhere:
On the road
If you're involved in a road traffic accident as a driver, motorbike rider, cyclist or pedestrian, the injuries can cause lasting damage. If the incident was somebody else's fault, you could be entitled to claim for permanent scar compensation.
At work
Your employer has a duty of care to your wellbeing but there are still hundreds of thousands of injuries at work every year in this country. If you've been physically scarred while doing your job, you could be entitled to make an accident at work claim.
In public
If your injury occurs due to an accident in a public place such as a train station or a park, you may have grounds to make a scarring claim.

How much compensation can I get for a scar?
It's difficult to say exactly how much you could receive because every case is different and has its own unique details. The value of your scar claim will depend on several things, such as the severity of the scarring as well as how that has affected your physical and mental health. For example, a facial scar compensation amount may be different to compensation for a scar on your arm.

Is there a time limit on making a claim?
Is there a time limit on making a claim?
You usually have three years to make a claim for permanent scar compensation. This period starts from the day the injury occurred, but there are a couple of exceptions to that rule.
You might be given an extension to the deadline if your injury was so serious that you were unable to claim at first. It's also possible to claim for a child at any stage before their 18th birthday, but the three-year limit comes into force after that.
Will my scarring claim go to court?

Most claims are settled out of court but there's no need to worry if that's not the case with you. Your solicitor will take care of all the legal proceedings so you can focus on your recovery.
Frequently asked questions...
Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to make a claim on behalf of a loved one. For instance, you can claim on behalf of your child if they were injured and under the age of 18.
You may also be able to claim on behalf of an injured person who's suffered head or brain trauma, or someone who has a pre-existing medical condition which means they are unable to make a decision themselves. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is in place to protect vulnerable parties and help people establish when a person lacks capacity to make their own decision.
If you are claiming on behalf of a loved one, it is important you have all the details of their accident and medical treatment. A personal injury solicitor will be able to take you through this and explain how the compensation claim process works in these situations.
If your loved one has died due to an accident that wasn't their fault, we understand how difficult it can be to cope. While we can't take back what happened, we can help you to claim compensation which may relieve some of the financial pressure you're facing.
In cases involving very serious or catastrophic injury that have gone to Court, the Judge can rule that the compensation is paid in a continuous series of regular payments if it's in the best care interests of the Claimant.
Always carried out by an independent medical professional, our assessment focuses on the physical and (any) psychological damage caused by the injury.
While you won't be able to choose who examines you, you will be able to choose a location for the examination that's most convenient for you.
Can I make a no win no fee scar compensation claim?
Can I make a no win no fee scar compensation claim?
Yes, we take most personal injury cases on a no win no fee basis. This allows you to claim without risking your finances because as long as you have the right insurance in place, you won't have to pay any legal fees if you lose. And your solicitor will organise the necessary policy for you, so you don't need to worry about that either.
If you win your scarring claim, your solicitor will receive a pre-agreed percentage of your compensation and you'll get the rest. In the unlikely event that you lose, you won't have to pay a thing.
There may be rare circumstances where we can't help you claim for permanent scar compensation on a no win no fee basis. If that is the case for you, we'll let you know straight away. How to proceed is then up to you.
