We're experts in knee injury claims - let us help you get the compensation you deserve
A knee injury can quite literally stop you in your tracks. Often debilitating, sometimes life-changing, knee injuries can carry a huge range of implications for their victims in both the short and long term.
With many knee injuries requiring weeks or months of recovery time, suffering one can leave you financially or personally dependent on others. Furthermore, knee injuries can severely limit your day-to-day activities and your usual sense of independence, which in turn can have a considerable impact on your mental health.
At National Accident Law, we know how physically, mentally and financially devastating knee injuries can be. Likewise, we believe that no one suffering from a knee injury should have to worry about money while they recover.
If the accident that caused your knee injury wasn't your fault, our specialists can help you to seek the amount of compensation that you deserve. To find out more about how we can help, contact us on or you can arrange a call back from a member of our expert team.
What are some common accidental causes of knee injuries?
If you've injured your knee in the last three years in an accident that wasn't your fault, you could be eligible to make a knee injury claim.
There are all sorts of ways you can suffer a knee injury - below are just a few of the most common accidental causes. Regardless of how you've injured your knee, we can help. Call us on to talk through your accident details in complete confidence.
Slips, trips and falls
Slips, trips and falls are a part of life for all of us. However, if your slip, trip or fall was a result of negligence on the part of a landlord, retailer, council or any other entity that carries an obligation to keep you safe, they could be liable for your knee injury.
Work-related knee injuries
Every employer has a duty of care to its staff, which means taking reasonable steps to ensure your safety in the workplace. Should you suffer a knee injury at work arising from your employer's negligent or harmful behaviour, you could make a claim.
Road accidents
Knee injuries are very common in road traffic accidents, particularly for the likes of motorbike riders, cyclists and pedestrians. Should an injury result from a collision that wasn't your fault, you could be able to make a claim for a knee injury car accident settlement.
Sports injuries
Playing sports like football and rugby carry an ‘associated risk' of injury, with knee injuries being some of the most common. There are, however, some instances where the accident and resulting injury are a result of the negligent action - or inaction - of someone else. In the case of the latter, you can make a claim.
Which types of knee injuries are most common?
Which types of knee injuries are most common?
Knee injuries come in several different forms, all of which can be debilitating in their own way. They can affect any of the ligaments, tendons or bursa that surround your knee, as well as the bones, cartilage and ligaments that make up the joint itself.
Here are some of the most common types of knee injury:
- Knee ligament injuries: There are four main ligaments in the knee - the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL). Tearing any one of these ligaments can be incredibly painful and debilitating. An ACL tear, for example, usually takes at least three months to heal.
- Fractures: The bones of the knee, including the kneecap (patella), can be broken via a slip, trip or fall, or a road accident. A broken patella can take three to six months to heal, with some more severe injuries taking even longer.
- Cartilage/meniscus tears: Injury to either the medial meniscus on the inside of the knee or the lateral meniscus on the outside of the knee can often result from an accident at work or a road traffic accident. Rehabilitation for a meniscus tear typically takes three-to-six months.
- Bursitis: Hard impacts - such as a fall - to the fluid-filled sacs (bursa) that cushion your knee can cause them to inflame and the knee joint to become swollen. Bursitis can not only be extremely painful but also cause mobility issues.
While the recovery times for many of these knee injuries is a matter of months, long-term issues such as instability in the knee or chronic pain are a possibility. Should you have suffered from any of the injuries above or another knee injury and it wasn't your fault, contact us on , request a call back or even start your claim online today to see if you are eligible to make a knee injury compensation claim.

How much compensation can I get for a knee injury?
How much compensation can I get for a knee injury?
No knee injury claim is the same and, because of that, there's no set amount of compensation afforded to a particular type of injury or a particular set of circumstances.
Every claim is assessed in its own right, with factors such as loss of earnings, required medical care and the victim's pain and suffering all taken into account when establishing a suitable figure.
The table below offers some estimated payout brackets for different types of knee injury based on the 15th edition of the Judicial College Guidelines, as set out by the Ministry of Justice.
Injury type | Compensation amount |
Less serious injury where there is continuous aching or discomfort, or occasional pain that resolve within a short space of time | £11,730 Up to £12,900 |
Injuries involving dislocation, torn cartilage or meniscus resulting in minor instability or other mild future disability | £12,650 to £22,340 or £13,920 to £24,580 |

Frequently asked questions...
Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to make a claim on behalf of a loved one. For instance, you can claim on behalf of your child if they were injured and under the age of 18.
You may also be able to claim on behalf of an injured person who's suffered head or brain trauma, or someone who has a pre-existing medical condition which means they are unable to make a decision themselves. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is in place to protect vulnerable parties and help people establish when a person lacks capacity to make their own decision.
If you are claiming on behalf of a loved one, it is important you have all the details of their accident and medical treatment. A personal injury solicitor will be able to take you through this and explain how the compensation claim process works in these situations.
If your loved one has died due to an accident that wasn't their fault, we understand how difficult it can be to cope. While we can't take back what happened, we can help you to claim compensation which may relieve some of the financial pressure you're facing.
In most circumstances for adults who were 18 years old or over at the time, it's essential that proceedings are issued within three years of the accident or incident date. In cases where the injured person was under 18 years of age when the accident or incident occurred, the three-year period expires on their 21st birthday.
If you don't issue your claim within those time limits, you won't usually be able to proceed. This is called being 'time-barred'. Extensions to the time limits are only available in exceptional circumstances and we can talk you through these if they're relevant to your claim.
