What is a high-pressure injection injury?
Also referred to as a hydraulic injection or hydraulic oil injection injury, these types of injuries occur in the workplace, usually in settings such as factories or warehouses and in construction or mechanical industries.
A high-pressure injection injury involves the skin being broken by a high-pressure force of fluid. Although the initial injury can appear minor, failure to seek medical treatment can lead to severe consequences including amputation or even death.
This is because high-pressure injection injuries often involve fluids such as oil, paint, grease and chemicals, which can be toxic. Even in the absence of highly toxic fluid, though, extreme-pressure delivery of benign materials can also cause significant injury in some cases. Although high-pressure water injuries are likely to be less serious than other fluids, they still pose a risk.
Because high-pressure injection injuries are rare, unfortunately, when they do happen, people often don't realise the seriousness.

At the time of injury, the only symptom might be a small puncture wound. However, if left untreated, severe symptoms could develop. High-pressure injuries usually occur in the hand, due to the nature of the accident.
The main risk of a hydraulic injection injury is compartment syndrome. Symptoms can include:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Restricted movement of the affected body part
- Numbness or weakness
If the injury has progressed to this stage, then surgery is usually carried out to provide pressure relief and to save the affected body part. In more severe cases, amputation is sometimes necessary. High-pressure injection injuries can even be fatal.
What are the causes of hydraulic injection injuries?
Most high-pressure hydraulic injection injuries occur during the use of hydraulic equipment. Faulty equipment or poorly maintained components are often to blame. It's also imperative that workers are properly trained on the correct use of equipment to prevent injury.
Workplaces in the relevant industries should implement health and safety regulations around the use of such equipment, including pressure testing, to ensure the well-being of their staff. This should include risk assessments, personal protective equipment, maintenance and regular training.
Failure to do this can increase the risk of injuries such as those related to hydraulic injections.
Can I make a hydraulic injection injury claim?
If you've sustained a hydraulic fluid injection injury and you believe your employer was at fault, you could make a claim. We'll take the time to talk through your experience with you and discuss the strength of your claim, providing you with the information to make an informed choice. If you wish to proceed, you could make a no win no fee compensation claim.
It's important to note that, even if you've not taken time off due to your injury, you can still make a claim.
As well as reimbursing any costs you've endured as a result of your injury, making a claim could help you move forward with your life. It can also highlight any areas of negligence in the workplace which could help prevent any future injury from occurring.

How much compensation could I get for a hydraulic injection injury?
No two high-pressure injection injuries are the same so it's difficult to give an exact figure for what you might receive. The Judicial College Guidelines are used as a basis to fairly determine any compensation amounts.
Settlements are based on a variety of factors relating to your individual injury and are split into two categories:
- General damages: These relate to your suffering at the time of the injury and in the longterm.
- Special damages: These include financial aspects such as loss of income, expenses and any treatment costs.
Our compensation calculator can be used to provide a rough guide as to the settlement amount you could receive. Our expert team will be able to provide you with insight on expected high-pressure injection injury compensation amounts during your initial phone call when they learn more about your case.

Frequently asked questions...
If you have been injured in the last three years and it wasn't your fault, it is highly likely that you are eligible to make a compensation claim.
There are some cases where the eligibility criteria may differ. If you are unsure whether you have a claim, contact our friendly legal team today.
Every claim we handle is different and that makes it hard for us to say how long your compensation claim might take. However, the bulk of the claims we handle are relatively short in duration.
In simpler cases where fault is clear and undeniable, the claim may be settled quickly, and even disputed claims can be negotiated to a settlement in approximately 12 months.
However, if you've suffered a serious or life-changing injury then your compensation claim may take longer. This is because we need to understand its full impact and make sure your future rehab or treatment costs are adequately covered.
You can rest assured that we will stay in touch with you throughout the process so that you'll always know how things are progressing.
Good quality, pin-sharp ones please - and the more the better! Quality photographic evidence is a really important way of illustrating the cause of your accident and the injuries you have sustained. The pictures will then form a key part of the evidence we present should we take your claim forward. Generally speaking, we'll need the following photographic evidence from you:
- Images of your injuries (including close-ups, particularly for facial wounds), spread over a few days if possible so we can see how you're healing.
- The general location and exact spot where the accident happened.
- The defect or hazard that caused the accident if it was a trip, slip or fall (for example, a broken kerb, raised pavement or poor lighting).
- The road layout (and any defects) if it was a road traffic accident for a driver, motorcycle/moped rider, passenger or pedestrian.
Getting the pictures to us is easy. When you've opened MyAccount - our secure online area for all your claim documentation - you'll find detailed photography guidelines. After you've taken the pictures, you simply upload them for us to view and check.
