What are the most common injuries from falling objects?
Although it's known as a falling object injury, it doesn't necessarily mean that damage and pain caused is the result of an object falling from a significant height. Injuries can range from slight to severe, with life-limiting damage being a real possibility.
Some of the most common injuries caused by people being hit by a falling object include:
- Facial injuries
- Spinal damage that results in tetraplegia or paraplegia
You might be able to make a falling object accident claim if the accident was caused by someone else's actions or negligence.
What types of accidents can cause a falling object injury?
Falling object injuries are usually caused by an accident. There are some common causes of falling object accidents and locations where these happen:
Accidents at work: It's most common for someone to be struck by a falling object if they work in an industry that uses heavy machinery, tools or equipment. Falling object injury statistics show that injuries caused by moving objects was the third most common type of workplace accident in 2020/21.
While employers in these industries should have appropriate health and safety rules, training plans and risk assessments in place, unfortunately accidents can still happen. If you've been hit by a falling object at work, you could make a claim.
Accidents in public: There are several examples of this type of accident happening in public. Luggage might fall from a compartment on public transport, or an unstable sign could fall, striking people passing by below. A light fixture could come loose or debris and building materials could fall from a building site.

Yes. You can seek compensation for a child if they were injured when they were struck by a falling object before their 18th birthday. You can also claim for someone else if they are unable to do so for themselves. This falls under the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
If you are claiming on behalf of someone else, you'll need to know the details of their accident and have access to their medical records. Information like this could be vital evidence for the claim, so it's important that you're able to obtain the relevant documentation early in the process.
