What are the different types of ankle injuries?
Generally, ankle injuries are split into different grades of severity. These include:
Grade 1 ankle sprain
This is when ligaments are strained but you will be able to bear weight on your ankle and walk.
Grade 2 ankle sprain
If you have this ankle sprain, one of the ligaments has suffered a partial tear. You will walk with a noticeable limp with this injury.
Grade 3 ankle sprain
A complete rupture of one or more ligaments is grade 3. This will leave you unable to walk and can take a long time to recover from.
Broken ankle
This occurs when one or more of the ankle joint bones break and can take a while to recover from. In some cases, surgery is needed to reconstruct the ankle.
How much compensation can I claim for an injured or broken ankle?
We understand how ankle injuries can affect your finances, so it's only natural that you want to know how much compensation you could claim. However, there isn't a simple answer to this. Instead, the compensation amount for your ankle injury claim will be determined by some of the following factors:
- The type of ankle injury suffered
- Whether you can work
- Medical and rehabilitation costs and expected future costs
- Any modifications you've had to make to your home or car to cope with your injury
- Costs of care received by full-time staff or a family member
- The impact on your family's lives
- Any other financial burdens as a result of being injured over a long period
Our team will use the Judicial College Guidelines as a guide to figuring out how much compensation you could receive for your ankle injury. These amounts can be seen in the table below. However, you must remember that your final compensation amount will depend on the specific aspects of your injury.
We also have an ankle injury compensation calculator you can use to get a rough estimate of the amount you could receive.

Should I make an ankle injury claim?
Whether you've suffered an ankle injury at work or in a public place, it can be very painful and leave you unable to move properly for a long amount of time. This could mean you can't work, which may lead to financial worries and potentially mental health problems too.
By making a compensation claim for an ankle injury that wasn't your fault, you could ease the financial concerns. Plus, this can be an eye-opening experience for the people to blame too. It may mean safety protocols are followed more closely in the future, so other people are less likely to suffer as you have.

As with most personal injuries, you'll have three years from the date of your ankle injury to make your claim. However, there are some exceptions. Parents or guardians will be able to claim on behalf of a child at any time up to their 18th birthday. Once they turn 18, the three-year limit will begin if no one has acted on their behalf already.

What happens to my compensation if my ankle injury claim is successful?
What happens to my compensation if my ankle injury claim is successful?
Should your ankle injury claim be upheld, it will usually be the other side's insurer that pays the compensation in one lump sum. This will be done within 21 days of settlement - or judgement if the claim went to court. We'll then deduct the fees for our services and you'll receive a cheque in the post once the funds are cleared in our bank account.
If the claimant is under 18, the settlement amount will be invested by the Court Funds Office. This will then be released on their 18th birthday. However, in some circumstances, a judge may order the funds to be released in small amounts if it's in the best interests of the child.
